Scotty looked at her blankly.
“Leonora had no business being at the house today,” Abby explained. “And yet she’s here.”
“But she saw the front door was wide open,” Scotty reasoned. “She came to see if everything was okay.”
“That would be a perfectly good reason to be here,” Abby agreed. “If you could see the front door from the road – but you can’t.”
Scotty frowned. “How do you know?”
“There’s a bend in the drive,” Abby explained. “When you drove down it to park the car, you were out of sight before you hit the gates.”
“So Leonora lied,” Scotty said, the penny finally dropping. “Why did she do it?”
“Who’s to say?” Abby shrugged. “Sounds to me like she wanted to reconcile with William – 42 years is a long time to be married. Hearing of his relationship with Rita can’t have been easy to swallow. Still, murder is murder.”
Abby unhooked the handcuffs from her belt and went back inside.
